Just to let you know that the WordCamp UK 2008 buzz is not over just yet! As everyone involved settles back into their normal lives the work continues behind the scenes!
There where many positive outcomes for the future, which I will discuss below in a little more detail:
- A centralised WordCamp UK community
- Regional WordPress groups
- Potential WordPress UK marketplace (needs some thought)
- WordCamp UK 2009
An outcome of the conference was that the UK WordPress community needs a centralised platform to share knowledge and build upon the friendships and associations built-up during WordCamp UK 2008. This is currently in discussion on the mailing list and is likely to be a WordPressMu/bbPress based platform, with a view to full BuddyPress adoption once the platform has matured a little more. We could, as a community provide some useful feedback for BuddyPress development.
For those waiting on the profile pages - it is envisaged that these will be developed as art of this new platform.
Also under discussion is how we can best help develop regional groups of WordPress users - this should, again be under the WordPress UK umbrella site. The important thing to think about here is how best to allow regional discussion, but ensure that broader knowledge is shared between the whole community.
There is some talk of a ‘marketplace’ for WordPress designers, developers and content creators to market their skills. This needs a-lot of thought to get just right - otherwise it will just end-up being a link-farm. I’m guessing that this will come a-little later.
I STRONGLY URGE any developers thinking about developing their own individual sites around these topics to NOT DO IT! The UK community needs a central location for this and a domain name has been secured, so please - you will only fragment the community if you launch something similar! Why not dedicate your efforts to helping those involved build a really killer UK site… many hands make light work!
Finally - dare we mention WordCamp UK 2009?! Because of the resounding success of this years event, we agreed in the brief consultation at the end of the conference that this should be an annual event moving forward. A-lot has been learned from this years event, so keep your eyes peeled for more info on this!

Couldn’t agree more about maintaining a centralised site - much better for the greater good than everyone doing their own Thang.
Just want to mention that I’ve moved all my WordCampers blogroll links over to my personal site so I don’t bore commercial clients with the geeky stuff. So please don’t be offended. Also, if you’re a fellow wordcamper and I don’t have a link to you at my personal site under Wordcampers just let me know and I’ll add you.
