Hours after the official public release of WordPress 2.6, codename “Tyner” after jazz pianist McCoy Tyner, the WordCamp UK blog has upgraded - it would have been rude not to! How could I resist Wiki-like post revisions and Google Gears integration! Released almost a month early, it not only shows a solid commitment from the core dev team, but also neatly ties up with WordCamp UK 2008 this weekend!
The major features are explained in the video below:
Easy upgrade
WordPress 2.6 shouldn’t have any major compatibility issues with plugins (but only time will tell!), but it’s always a good idea to disable plugins before upgrading. I always like to physically delete the folders on the server, and then upload the new ones. Just to be doubly sure I always use the ‘mirror’ function in Fetch on OSX to ensure that all files have been correctly uploaded… I’ve been caught out with this one before!
I use the excellent Audit Trail plugin on this site (and others) to perform the roll-back functionality on WordPress - now some of this functionality is in the core WordPress code I am VERY happy, I consider Audit Trail to be in my default WordPress installations!
In addition to this, the new ‘press-it’ function is exciting stuff that I look forward to trying out, allowing you to share and post content to your blog quickly through browser integration. It’s got to be said - this is a big point upgrade, and certainly lays the foundations for some new exciting developments in future upgrades.
